Those who know the Latin – Puerto Rican culture or have tasted the food know that Hispanics are famously known and loved for their food especially Arroz con Gandules / translated in English Yellow rice and pigeon peas, this dish recipe has been passed down from generation to generation. I myself have been asked for this recipe from a hand full of my own friends and associates, today I’ll be sharing this delicious recipe with you all so it can become one of your homes favorite dishes.

  • 1 can of Gandules / pigeon peas (any brand)
  • 4 cups of long grain rice
  • 1 packet of sazón seasoning (you can find in the Spanish seasoning section)
  • 2 bay leafs
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 5 cups water
  • 2 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 tablespoons of sofrito (you can find in the Spanish frozen section)
  • 1 can corn (optional) / 1 square slice diced ,of cooking ham (optional)
  • 1 square of aluminum foil (but not necessary j

In a rice pot you will place over medium heat , you will add your 3 tablespoons of sofrito , you will add your Gandules / pigeon peas, using the same can of your Gandules / pigeon peas you will now add water to the rim of the can and also add to the rice pot, you will put your packet of sazón , at this point you can add your can of corn or diced cooking ham (optional) add your 2 bay leafs let everything simmer. While your mixture is simmering you’ll want to wash your 4 cups of rice with cold water and drain once washing rice your mixture should be sizzling, add your rice ,and 5 cups of water you’ll want the water to cover the rice completely. So add more if needed, add your salt and oil stir around to mix together, raising your heat to medium high #8 on most electric stoves, allow rice to completely dry up once dried you’ll want to lower your heat to medium low on a electric stove it would be a #4. Cover your rice with aluminum foil or just with rice cover and let cook until rice is soft. Turn off stove and your Arroz con Gandules is ready to serve. (This dish is served with any type of meat )

Enjoy –  Buen Provecho
