TIn general, people love fad diets because they promise extreme weight loss quickly. The problem is, they can also be unhealthy (hello, Atkins) or lead you to gain pounds back afterwards (we’re looking at you, juice detox). But as Hollywood stars have increasingly turned away from quick-fix diets in favor of healthier eating as a lifestyle, the keto diet has soared in popularity.
The keto, or ketogenic, diet is basically a high-fat, low-carb eating plan where the emphasis is on consuming healthy, clean fats that the body can process for energy. Think: olives, nuts, fish, coconut oil and avocado (all things that have been linked to other benefits including everything from brain health to smoother skin). “With a keto diet, the person is hoping to be in ketosis where their body is using stored fat,” NYC-based dietitian Keri Glassman tells Us. Put another way: “When the body reaches a ketogenic state, it turns to stored fat for energy.”

As someone with Type 1 diabetes, the seemingly ageless star has always been focused on keeping her diet healthy and clean. But the funny thing about Berry and the keto diet, her trainer Peter Lee Thomas told Us in October 2018, is that she had been doing it for years without knowing! “When I looked at what she was eating I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. You’re totally doing this ketogenic diet which is really hot right now,’” said the pro. “And she was like, ‘Woah, what’s that?’ So when we looked into it, she and I both were perplexed that she was already doing that and she was already in ketosis.” A long-time proponent of the high-fat, low-carb lifestyle, the actress told Women’s Health in November 2018 that an antioxidant smoothie with acai berries, blueberries, banana and coconut oil is a diet staple. “I love finding things that are good for you and also taste amazing. I try to get enough healthy fats, protein, and foods that give me energy.
The keto diet did her body good when she trained to film 2018’s Tomb Raider. After adding 12 pounds of muscle, her trainer Magnus Lygdback told Pop Sugar, the actress started a “cutting cycle” to keep her new muscle mass but shed fat using keto. As well as seafood for protein, Vikander consumed “MCT oil, avocado and coconut oil as a fat source,” said her pro.
Gym, tan… keto? The Jersey Shore star started an Instagram account — @ketoguido of course — just to track his keto journey. A whopping 50 pounds down from where he started, a ripped Guadagnino wrote in December 2017, “I was fat and out of shape from eating too much sugar. Then I followed a keto diet (with one or 2 cheat meals a week) and the fat went away. It’s that simple. No drugs, pills or shortcuts.”
The reality star creates her eating regimen by borrowing from many different diet principles. In January 2018, Kardashian revealed on her website that she had practiced a ketogenic diet in conjunction with intermittent fasting “for 2-3 months” in 2017. As dietitian Keri Glassman explains, keto is often paired with intermittent fasting because of the complementary functions they provide. “For most people doing intermittent fasting, they are just reducing calories,” the pro tells Us. “Their body won’t turn to stored fat, because even though they’ve fasted, they have enough reserves.”
